Why oh why do people exclude fruit from their diets when aiming to drop weight or “shred”!

Eyes seem to be on the summer months and the fact we could be jetting away for an overseas holiday and with that there has been an uptake in people starting to get more active and getting rid of the “covid fluff” which has been built up over the last 12-15 months.

Touching base with one of the new members to my Online Training Hub this week who jumped into a consultation we covered an awful lot in respect of training / exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress, current lifestyle choices and everything life has to throw at us really!

They are making a big push to get in shape for a potential holiday and for the summer months coming up. Its a great focus to have, although I’m all for instilling good habits that keep us in condition 365 - 24/7, and nice 80-20 application to give us a healthy, balanced and varied lifestyle that allows enjoyment and flexibility.

Nonetheless they have taken a positive step forward and jumped onto this team. The platform suits them perfectly as they can train more often without it affecting or adding extra stress to their life, they can access live and on demand sessions when they are free to do so.

One point that came up was that of fruits when starting to “diet” - (tidying your foods up) and they had been told to drop fruits out if they wanted to drop body fat and get “shredded” for summer……… WHY would you do that !

I know some other people (coaches) may tell you to stop eating fruit if you’re dieting, but I don’t do that and I disagree with this, and here are 3 reasons why!

1. You will miss out on so much natural nutrition by cutting out fruit. Fruits are full of so many essential vitamins, minerals, trace elements and digestive enzymes. I have urged and posted for my team before to include pineapples in their diet, perfect after a big meal, or any meal in fact! A great source of bromelain which is a good digestive enzyme, berries are full of antioxidants, kiwi’s full of vitamin c - the list goes on, why would you want to neglect all of this goodness.

2. I often come across diets which always fall short in dietary fibre, a general rule of thumb would be 20g Female / 25g Male per day - fibre is essential to maintain a healthy and functioning gut. If your gut isn’t functioning properly you may find your body’s ability to burn body fat might be somewhat suppressed. Apples, pears, kiwi’s and bananas are all a great source and it would be foolish to drop any of these from your diet - even when “dieting” down.

3. Often when dieting down people are constantly hungry - fruits are low in calories when you actually consider the volume you get, you can pack your diet out, feel fuller and get in some quality nutrition. And lets face it - fruits are refreshing to eat as well, if you have bad cravings they could be the perfect thing to have post meal to help combat these cravings!

If you’ve been told by someone to drop fruits out of your diet when you’re aiming to drop weight, or in general then ask WHY, don’t just do as they say - ask why and get an answer as to the benefits are for this!

Your diet should be varied and include many different fruits which you enjoy eating.
